25th Anniversary Week - What did Gary Owens have to do with Bruce and Karen's Wedding

He was late!!! Here is the story back in 1983 Soundtrack of the 60s was a syndicated radio show that was heard Sundays from 8 AM - 11 AM on WYNY when it was an Adult Contemporary station at 97.1 FM. I knew that on the day of the wedding my best man and fellow radio enthusiast Herb was going to pick me up about 8 AM and we would drive to the Old Westbury Hebrew Congregation for the wedding and arrive about 9 AM. I wrote a letter to ABC Watermark the producers of the show asking for 3 Beatles songs to be played in the first hour of the show for our wedding. We drove to the synagogue listening to the show on WYNY and didn't hear it. Oh well, I guess they don't play requests. About a week after we returned from our honeymoon in Hawaii, I received a little package from Soundtrack of the Sixties. There was an autographed photo of Gary Owens and a letter from Janis Hahn, the producer of the show congratulating us. It included a cassette with a humorous message from Gary Owens wishing us a happy wedding followed by the 3 Beatles songs:
  • Ask Me Why
  • And I Love Her
  • The Long and Winding Road

If it came before the wedding we would have played it at the reception. Several months later WYNY dropped the show. I wrote a letter to the producer asking her to get another New York station to carry it. She wrote back saying that the show was going to be cancelled in a few more weeks anyway. She sent us three records with the show. Back then the syndicator would mail or FedEx (Hi Dave) the show to the radio stations. Now the shows would be sent over the Internet.
