The Queen (Movie)/Queens College Basketball

It was a dreary day today, but I just can not stay home.  I had already seen most of the decent movies at the multiplex so I decided to see The Queen playing at the Kew Gardens theater which shows only independent films.  That movie theater is a dinosaur since it is in a neighborhood not a mall.  It has 5 screens but most of the patrons were senior citizens.  As I have discussed on this blog before most of the movies these days appeal to people under 35.  Middle aged people like myself and older people should have movies released for us.  The film was a fictionalized account of how the royal family reacted to the tragic death of Princess Diana.  When we got home we listened to the latest Theme Time Radio which was about hair.  Bob even played some songs about bald men.  I see enough bald men during the week :)  Even though Saturday night oldies was a full four hours tonight, the Slutsky family does not sit home.  We left about 6:45 to see Queens College play Adelphi.  Queens lost 64-50.  I know that several people record Saturday night oldies so I'll download the 2 hours that I missed tomorrow.

Big Sale at Virgin Records

Today, I went to a professional meeting in the Union Square area of Manhattan.  I could not resist the temptation to stop into the Virgin Music Store.  There are so few music stores now :(.  Anyway, they had many CDs on sale for $10.  Many Beatles CDs as well as Simon and Garfunkel, Jimi Hendrix, and Bob Dylan.  The problem was that I already had the songs on those CDs on vinyl.  I never discarded any of the records that I collected over the years.  Instead of paying for music that I alread own, I bought a 2 CD set of the Kinks for $10.  I don't have any of their music in my collection in any format.

Mets Tickets for 2007

I got a letter about a week ago from the Mets saying that 7 packs were going on sale starting today.  For the last two seasons my package tickets were right behind home plate in the upper deck.  When I bought the tickets tonight the best available were in section 27 just past first base.  Obviously since the team did so well last season, there is a higher demand for tickets. It will be worse in 2009 when the new stadium opens.

Elvis Presley's Birthday

Here I go again listening to the Beatles and writing a blog entry about Elvis Presley.  This morning we were listening to WFUV when Claudia Marshall mentioned that today was David Bowie's birthday.  I mentioned to Lee that tonight we should play a David Bowie.  Lee had to remind me that today was Elvis' birthday.  The king would have been 72 had he lived.  I remember back in 1977 I was vacationing in Cape Cod when I heard the news that the King had died.  A few years ago, we visited Graceland.  Most of the people visiting were not yet born in 1977.

Feeling Better today

I felt well enough to get out of the apartment.  Staying at home is one of the bad things about being ill.  We were thinkig of going to the Hofstra men's basketball game at 4 PM.  Since I was still not completely up to par we went to St. Johns which is a lot closer to home to see Women's basketball.  Yes Din, I know the quality of play isn't that good in Womens basketball.  St. Johns lost to Georgetown 53-45.  It takes a good week to get rid of a cold.  Tomorrow will be better.
